Bear Hunts

Joe Bowen has been a registered guide with the state of Maine since 1993 and has professionally guided hunters for over 20 years. He brings to each hunt the zeal and enthusiasm as if it was his first hunt, yet still maintaining the degree of professionalism and confidence that is necessary for those who are first time bear hunters.

Along with Joe, we have a guide team made up of some of our greatest friends and professionals in the industry. Also, two wonderful ladies that do all our home cooking.

?Your hunt will last 6 days with a very good chance of shooting your bear. Should you take your bear early in the week, there are many lakes and streams for you to enjoy some fishing. You can also coyote hunt at no extra charge. If your hunt is during the month of October, you can also grouse and turkey hunt in the afternoons (there will be a guide fee per day of turkey hunting).

?We take a variety of age groups, ranging from Junior to Senior hunter, and we will take anyone who has the proper hunting license and knowledge of hunter's safety.

Bear Hunts

If you have been looking for a high quality successful bear hunt you need not look any further. Here at Loon Lodge we offer the best bear hunts in the business, we make every effort to make your hunt both SUCCESSFUL and ENJOYABLE. Our business is to get you your chance at a bear, because when it comes right down to it, YOU are our best advertisement.

The Allagash Lake Region is rich in bear habitat, mile after mile of roadless remote forests, miles from any towns or developments. We are the only guide and outfitter authorized to use this remote region. Because we have this control, we can manage the bear hunting to provide excellent hunting year after year. We have set aside our core area and do not even offer any hunting within nine miles of our lodge. This is what we call our bear preserve. Outside of that area we have over 300 square miles of area to run our bear hunts in. We rotate stands each week so that we do not over harvest any one area. Each week our hunters are guaranteed a fresh stand to hunt from that no other hunter has used whether you come the first week or the last. To assure our hunters a great hunt we have also set up numerous backup stands as a standby.

Another policy here at Loon Lodge is the limited amount of hunters that we will take in a season. We are not in the assembly line business of hunting. Because of this we have to turn away many hunters, but that is just what makes our hunts so successful.

Our area also has a lot to do with the success of our hunts. Vast areas of unbroken forests, big beech ridges, large cuts full of raspberries and blueberries and dark swampy bogs. There are no paved roads, power lines or developments to disturb the bears movement or habits. All this makes for the best bear habitat the state has to offer.

Baiting is another important factor in our success. Not so much as of what we are using, but the amounts that we use. In an average season we will use between 40,000 to 50,000 pounds of bait. Our stands are baited 30 days before the season (the maximum the state allows) and baited on a regular basis to keep the bears coming. Many of our hunters don’t just tell us about the bear they saw, but the number of bears they have seen.

Alaska Brown Bear hunting is the ultimate in North American adventure! Alaska hunting guide George Siavelis now specializes exclusively, on big brown bear hunting along Alaska’s Gulf Coast region. The streams in these areas receive heavy salmon runs, including all five pacific salmon species. The bears in these areas are as large as bears get anywhere in the world. Watching the largest carnivores on earth, aggressively hunting and catching salmon, often just 30 or 40 yards away, will get your blood pumping, and will not be forgotten easily. Hunting the great bears along these streams is very exciting in deed. A giant coastal brown bear is the ultimate trophy.

Alaska hunting guide George Siavelis has a U.S. Forest Service Priority Use Permit in the ChugachNational Forest, Cordova Ranger District. George lived, hunted, and trapped in the Alaskan bush year-round for many years and scouted many areas. George has chosen the best areas that he has found to hunt in. These game management units along the coast are indeed prime brown bear habitat and have very high densities of bears and produce some very large trophies. Recently the Alaska Board of Game has been taking steps to deal with the higher brown bear populations in some of these areas!

During the last few years, the focus has been on the fall hunts when the brown bears are concentrated along the small salmon streams. Consequently, more bears are seen at very close range. In fact, George likes to hunt right on what he calls the “salmon holes”, where the salmon congregate, and the big brown bears are actively fishing everyday. These coastal wet areas are lush, and rich in a diverse variety of wildlife.

Canadian Wilderness Outfitters - Manitoba

Canadian Wilderness Outfitters

Canadian Wilderness Outfitters

The best bear hunting in Canada is with the Canadian Wilderness Outfitters. The Canadian Wilderness Outfitters have been hunting bear in the Duck Mountains of Manitoba since 1996. The dense forested areas and rich agricultural land of the Swan River Valley provide the habitat and food source required to hunt the biggest trophy bears in Manitoba. If you’re looking to hunt trophy black bear or trophy brown bear, this is the Manitoba bear hunt for you.

SPRING OR FALL BEAR HUNT?

We hunt from mid May to Mid June then again end of August to mid September. When is the best time? Depends on your schedule & what you want in a bear. There is no size difference between a Spring bear skull and a Fall bear skull. However, there are major seasonal differences in weight and fur conditions. A bear can emerge in the Spring from its winter den weighing 30% less than it did in the Fall. While a bear dens he is living off his fat reserve. It is essential that during the Fall prior to denning a bear must gorge himself to put on all this extra weight. Therefore, that Fall bear can be huge due to this massive weight gain. Fur conditions also vary from season to season. Most hunters believe a bear’s fur is finest soon after den emergence in the Spring. That is when the guard hairs are the longest & the under fur the thickest. It is during the Spring that hunters must look at the condition of the fur carefully before shooting. Bears will scratch & rub themselves to help shed this heavy coat of fur leaving rubbed marks. A hunter may see a bear that has bare patches on their hind quarters or behind their front shoulders. A Fall bear fur will be sleek, dense, & shiny with no rubs. The benefit of being able to "look a bear over" while on a bait is that you can observe for the quality of the fur.

Manitoba Black Bears can come in "color phase" of brown, cinnamon and chocolate colors and as light as blonde.

Bear hunting requires some knowledge of bears, so we try our best to educate our hunters about judging bears for size, fur quality and sex. When you arrive we have "Bear School" where we discuss methods of baiting, hunting, recovering bears, our routine and the reasons for it, usual bear activity, how to judge bears, and most important the killing shot.

 Routine:

  1. Breakfast: Anytime
  2. Recovering Bears, Skinning Bears, Preparing Baits
  3. Lunch: Meal at Camp or Bagged Lunch to bring with you to the stand
  4. Leave Camp: Between 2pm-4pm
  5. Hunters settle into their stands: Between 4pm-5pm
  6. Hunt: Until dark which is around 10pm-11pm
  7. Back to camp and a meal: 12am

We access our areas by truck, quads and walking. Our stands are about 12-16 feet off the ground, or ground blinds that are between 10-75 yards from the bait depending upon what weapon you are shooting; gun or bow.

We try to obey good hunting principles of keeping scent to a minimum.  Our wilderness tent camp is at the base of the North slope of the Duck Mountains. We utilize canvas tents with hard floors & walls, bunk beds with good mattresses, rifle and archery range with meals in the main tent cabin.

Bear Hunts

Baldy Mountain Outfitters is located in the Duck Mountains of Manitoba, Canada and is one of the Hot Spots in North America for hunting trophy-size and color phase black bears including chocolate, cinnamon and blonde. This rolling, forested land is filled with lakes, swamps and streams and known for consistently producing high numbers of bears as well as bears with record dimensions. It also holds some of the highest color phase ratios in Canada. Baldy Mountain Outfitters has the largest hunting territory in the Duck Mountains at over 264,000 acres – an exclusive area which no other Outfitter is allowed to hunt. This is unlike some areas in Manitoba where Outfitters’ allocation areas overlap and are in competition of each other. With this low-pressure prime hunting area, Baldy Mountain Outfitters is able to provide a sustainable harvest of premium trophy and color phase bears.

This area in the Duck Mountains, previously owned by Tom and Debbie Ainsworth of Grandview Outfitters, had a legacy of producing trophy and color phase bears for over 30 years, with many repeat guests. The ideal landscape and virtually no pressure from local hunters also led to high numbers of bears consistently coming to the sites. Baldy Mountain Outfitters now owns and operates from this same area and long-established bait sites, plus has continued to expand its territory.

Our mission is to provide the highest quality of black bear hunting and bear harvesting in the industry while keeping it personal and conserving this rich resource for the future.

Why Us?

  1. We are passionate about bear hunting and providing premium-quality hunts
  2. High ethical standards in service provision and conservation management
  3. Among the highest success rates across North America for trophy class (Boone and Crockett) and color phase bears
  4. Consistently high numbers of bears
  5. Largest outfitting territory in the Duck Mountains of Manitoba
  6. Exclusive Outfitter rights for the hunting area
  7. Professional, experienced and knowledgeable guides
  8. Personable hunts that build relationships
  9. We like to have fun and have fun while we hunt
  10. Always working to improve and responsive to suggestions from guests
