California Euthanizes Bear In Poor Health

California DFW, Bear Hunting Magazine

California Fish and Wildlife officials captured and euthanized a young black bear this week near Interstate 10 after receiving calls regarding it. Area residents, some of whom had contacted them regarding the bear, were upset that they decided to euthanize the bear and not try and capture and treat it.

The DFW released a statement saying that when an officer located the approximately one year-old bear it was determined to be “in very poor health due to disease and malnutrition. Sometimes wild animals are found in such poor condition that the most humane course is euthanization. That was the case here, and the wildlife officer acted accordingly.”

The bear was found lying down in a field. A nearby abandoned house had evidence the bear had been living in it.
