Those with the Nevada Department of Wildlife are having to defend their handling of a black bear that died during an attempt to capture it earlier this month.
The agency had received reports of a small black bear that was causing traffic problems around Incline Village near Lake Tahoe. A state game warden found the bear in a tree and shot it with a tranquilizer, intending to then move it to a wildlife refuge.
A drug, made to help the animal breathe normally, that was administered seems to have not worked and the bear stopped breathing and died. The NDOW stated that only a half dozen of the roughly 500 bears they have tranquilized have died during the process. NDOW officials believe that the underweight bear's health problems probably were a factor in the death.
