U.S. Ban on Polar Bear Trophies UpheldUSFWS, Bear Hunting Magazine
Last week the D.C. Circuit court upheld the ban on the importation of polar bear trophies, rejecting a challenge from hunters, industry groups and the state of Alaska.
In May 2008, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service listed the polar bear as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. This listing barred the importation of polar bear trophies, including pelts, claws and heads, obtained by hunters, even if the hunt predated the bear species listing change.
