MI Man Fined For Killing Bear With Spear

Sault Ste. Marie News, Bear Hunting Magazine

A Michigan man was fined $1,000 for hunting big game with a weapon other than firearm. Paul Hinderliter was found guilty under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act for hunting with a spear. The spear was permanently forfeited to the Crown as the hunt took place in Canada.

The court heard that on August 13, 2008, a Sault Ste. Marie district conservation officer, working with the Canada Border Services Agency, conducted an inspection of Hinderliters vehicle. He found a spear head with dried blood on it which Hinderliter admitted to using in Ontario in 2007 to hunt and kill a black bear near Dubreuilville.
