Licensed black-bear hunters in central and western Massachusetts took 137 bears in September, the largest harvest in six years, according to the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife.
Rifles, muzzleloaders, archery equipment and handguns were allowed during the September season. This is the largest September bear harvest since 2003, when 142 bears were taken. The next bear hunting season begins Monday, November 2nd.
