The FBI released number this week showing that as firearms and ammunition experienced record sales in 2009 (at over 14 million), the nation's crime rates continued to fall.
During 2009, violent crime declined for the third straight year, with an estimated 5.3 percent drop from 2008 figures. Homicides were down 7.3 percent.
Data released by the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) for the year (2009) reported 14,033,824 NICS Checks, a 10 percent increase in gun purchases from the 12,709,023 reported in 2008. Of the NICS background checks preformed, .005% were denied.
