Montana FWP, Bear Hunting Magazine

Ani Hass, a former freestyle U.S. Ski Team member suffered only scratches to her left arm and chest after a run in with a black bear while running in western Montana.

The 24-year-old skier stated that while on a run near Missoula last Friday she saw some black bear cubs scurry up a tree. She then saw the mother bear run at her. Haas tried to run away, but was not fast enough. She turned around to face the sow as it lunged at her. She hit the bear in the head and threw a rock at it before the bear went after her again. The bear eventually lost interest after the woman was able to back away more.
