Glacier National Park officials released a statement saying that a grizzly bear sow mauled a 50-year-old male hiker from Minnesota, but the man was able to get away and go for help.

The man was hiking alone from Many Glacier to Piegan Pass around noon Friday when he encountered a mother grizzly with an older cub. The bear attacked and bit him on an arm, leg and foot and then shook him before walking away. The man did have bear spray on him, but was unable to retrieve it in time to use it.

The hiker is being hospitalized and the trail from Piegan Pass to Feather Plum Falls has been closed as park rangers continue their investigation.
