Hunter Hurt By Grizzly, Trail In MT Closed

US Forest Service, Montana FWP, Bear Hunting Magazine

A Kalispell, Montana man who was mauled by a grizzly over the weekend is in stable condition after undergoing leg surgery. The U.S. Forest Service has closed a two-mile section of trail in the Lewis and Clark National Forest southwest of East Glacier after the bear attacked the man while he was elk hunting. The grizzly chased the man and his hunting partner off an elk carcass on Saturday. The bear was then shot after charging the men and biting the one man's leg.

Rangers state that the remains of the elk and the grizzly could attract other bears so Trail 137 is closed from its junction with Trail 134 in the north to its junction with Trail 136 in the south to prevent further run-ins with bears.
