Hudson's Bear Hunt

A Lesson in Patience & Bonding

As the crisp fall air settled over our hunting lease, my son Hudsona seven-year-old with an insatiable curiosityand I decided to embark on a new adventure, bear hunting. We had hunted before, but never for boars in the wild. Despite our lack of experience in pursuing these formidable creatures, we were eager to test our skills on opening day. Our hunting grounds had a healthy bear population, so we were optimistic about the prospects.

With a combination of research and advice from seasoned hunters, we hatched a plan. Three days before the season opened, Hudson and I set out a bait barrel in a strategic location. Excitement buzzed between us as we anticipated the thrill of a bear hunt. Little did we know, this adventure would become a memorable chapter in our hunting story.

In an unconventional move, I proposed to Hudson that he join me on opening day, even if it meant skipping a day of first grade. His eyes lit up at the idea, and we quickly agreed that he would also be the designated cameraman for our expedition. So as noon approached on that first day, we climbed into our tree stand perched high above the forest floor. The anticipation hung thick in the air as we patiently waited for any sign of movement. Our conversations were hushed and our senses heightened as the minutes turned into hours.

Around the four-hour mark, Hudson turned to me with a serious expression, breaking the silence that had stretched before, and said, "Dad, if we see a bear, can I shoot it?" I hesitated, knowing that Hudson had never handled my crossbow before. After a moment of contemplation, I laid down a challenge for him. If he dedicated the next couple of hours to watching YouTube videos on where to shoot a bear and felt confident, I would allow him to take the shot.

Sure enough, Hudson, at the tender age of seven, immersed himself in the online world of bear anatomy and hunting techniques. Two hours later, he looked at me with a newfound confidence, and I couldn't help but feel a surge of pride for his commitment to learning.

The clock continued to tick, and seven and a half hours into our tree stand vigil, Hudson's patience was rewarded. A bear emerged from the shadows, presenting a perfect opportunity for a shot. With steady hands and a focused gaze, Hudson released the arrow, hitting the mark with precision. As a seasoned hunter, I was elated for my son's success and proud to have captured the moment on camera.

What initially impressed me was Hudson's ability to maintain composure and execute a perfect shot on his first bear hunt at such a young age. However, as we descended from the tree stand, my admiration deepened. Sitting in a tree for over seven hours without a break or food requires a level of patience and endurance that not many possess, especially for a young hunter like Hudson.

Hudson's success in both deer and bear hunting has solidified his love for the thrill of the chase. Surprisingly, he confessed that bear hunting had quickly become his favorite pursuit. It wasn't just about the kill: it was about the challenge, the strategy, and the moments spent in nature that made bear hunting uniquely special to him.

As we reflected on our first bear hunting adventure, it became clear that the experience was more than just a successful harvest. It was a lesson in perseverance, dedication, and the rewards that come with patience. Most importantly, it strengthened our father-son bond and created memories that will last a lifetime.

In the end, our bear hunt was a testament to the unexpected joys and lessons that come from stepping outside our comfort zones. It was a story of a young, first-time bear hunter and his father, turning an ordinary day in the woods into an extraordinary adventure filled with triumph, camaraderie, and a newfound passion for the pursuit of bears in the wild.
